The secret of the Shimano OT-SP41 Polymer Shift Cable Set is polymer coating that when viewed under a microscope looks like a series of tubes wrapped around the cable. This means less surface area rubbing the internal housing liner and it holds grease longer. The rear derailleurs RD-R9100, RD-R8000, RD-RX800 and RD-R7000 must be assembled on the bicycle with a special outer casing, OT-RS900.

When viewed under a microscope, the polymer looks like a series of tubes wrapped around the cable. This means less surface area rubbing the internal housing liner and it holds grease longer. Main benefits are significantly less shifting effort and the feeling of a quicker shift action.

Purpose of OT-RS900
The radius of the curved cable that is routed from the frame to the rear derailleur becomes smaller compared to the radius generated with other rear derailleurs. The commonly used outer casing, is too stiff for such small radius that it could cause technical problems on the adjustment barrel and rear wheel fitting and removal from the frame.
